A recent study produced by Groundwork Collaborative, Consumer Reports, and More Perfect Union revealed a troubling pattern inside Instacart’s platform. Customers who purchased the exact same product, from the same store, at the same time, were charged different prices—sometimes nearly 25 percent more.

This wasn’t a minor glitch or an isolated data point. It was systemic enough to prompt widespread concern. And when I compared my own Instacart receipts with others in my area, the issue became personal. The discrepancies mirrored the study’s findings.
Something in the system—likely an automated or algorithmic process—was making decisions customers had no way to understand or challenge.
And that’s the core issue.
